Problems I Normally Face During Listening Activities

In the Malaysia English University Test (MUET), there are four categories that need to be answer by the candidates. The categories are listening, speaking, reading and writing. The first part of this paper is listening. Listening paper acquire a great attention and concentration by the candidates themselves. The purpose of this writing is to discuss about the problems that I normally encounter during listening activities.

The great and major distraction that I always encounter is distraction. Distraction is a really annoying things that would be hated when it is happen. For example, other students making too much noise on the other side of classroom while me and my classmates were having a listening test. It is really bother the students. Plus, distraction can be anything other than noise. For example, the other students that walks to their class which passes by my class. It is really distract and not comfortable for us, the candidates of MUET. In conclusion, distraction always been a major reason of the loss of your concentration during listening activity.

Other than distraction, the accent or dialect use in the listening media can create a problem while I am on the listening activity. It is because I am not familiar with the accent use by the speaker in that media. For example, if the media plays a conversation between two Englishmen. It can be really hard to guess what are the things that they were discussed. Plus, I am not been exposed with English language accent that is surely differ in other countries. America slang and British slang is truly a different accent usage. The British are more polite in language rather than America's. But, American-English language is really easy to understand because  tons of media that we were exposed is by the America. In a nutshell, the accent usage in listening media only can be overcome if we were clear and aware about other language and dialect use in their own daily conversation.

Next, the attention of the candidates itself. For me, I can only sustain the listening media for a quite time, depending on the issue discussed in the media. If the issue is interesting and I have knowledge about the topic, it can be really easy for me to get concentrate and understand. But, I always thinks a lot while the media was played and decreasing my attention during the activity. This problem has limits my ability to stay longer to find the answers from the media. In conclusion, we must pay attention at the media and do not get distract by the others.

For the conclusion, it is clearly stated that distraction, accent or dialect use in the listening media and less attention created the problems of my listening ability during the listening activities. In order to overcome this problem, I have to do lots of exercise on listening activity and stay focus during the activity was conducted.
